Just a quick report on the above, as it was really a worthwhile outing. Apart from some
(three heads NOT being better than one!) of us getting vastly lost and doing a quick tour of the ole Vrystaat,
we all arrived before sundown, to find a beautiful stone farm house, manicured garden, and our accommodation in the old stone stable
most salubrious with everything for our comfort and convenience... even a hyena (stuffed) on the stair.. Some of us had actually been
there before but as our aging memories didn't have too much detail it didn't matter at all.
The first day hike turned out to be delightful, after a somewhat trepidatious start due to various
nagging ailments, but we found ourselves on the top of the mountain with very little effort, and the
interesting rock formations, views, promised-but-not-quite-found caves etc, made it all worth the doing.
Communal dinner provided by Judith and Frans (table nicely set with candles - Janine - and flowers from our kind hostess) turned out
to be Judy's 75th birthday celebration, and all good wishes to her for Friday, and many more trips to mountain tops!!!!
As Horst's movie evening could not come to pass due to computer incompatibility, we played a rather
hilarious game of charades in which Lydia and the Black Swan were the highlights.
Sunday's hike was somewhat desultory but satisfied the need to just Get Out into the great outdoors, and
Oscar hosted a brief seminar on Matters Photographic.... The remains of the communal meal was consumed,
Horst did a quick sale of Eleni's lovely fig jam and his home-made preserves, and we left in time to get (straight, this time) home
before dark. Horst did a detour in search of a cemetry, but found only a cheetah.
Thanks to everyone for making it such a super weekend....its the company, after all, that is the making of such an outing
And what was this thing about a cheetah? Here it is, in the middle of Vrede.
