Grootkloof Jan 2006

Fortunately I don't need to write much, Jenny has done that for me. She writes about the weekend we camped at Mountain Sanctuary Park in the Magaliesberge. On Saturday a group of ten undertook an epic journey through Grootkloof which is two gorges on from Mountain Sanctuary.

grootkloof02.jpg, 91664 bytesHappy Monday, dear friends....is it not a bit of - no - a BIG anticlimax to be back to the humdrum trivialities of life after such a marvellous weekend? So much crammed into such a short space of time.....the unexpected pleasure (for me) of tent town and the conviviality of the shady awning (and thanks to HL for sharing her tent with Janine and I) the absolutely mindbending Grootkloof, particularly memorable for its spectacular sheer narrowness, huge boulders and endlessly rushing waters which we encountered at extremely close quarters for long periods of time.
The Abseil, far more dramatic than anticipated, and cold as it was, was an eyeopener in respect of the courage of some and the fortitude and helpfulness of others. And once back home and grootkloof03.jpg, 45646 byteswarm and cosy, the day was completed by the beautifully set birthday table (per kind favour of Judith and Eleni) for Judy, where we enjoyed candlelit champagne and delicious treats with our supper. The rain had not dampened any spirits, as the Non-Abseil group had also had a pleasant walk, albeit partly in the wet, followed by a lazy afternoon in camp. I think we are all wonderful!!
Sunday's lounge around the rocks - bit of water, bit of walking, bit of talking - was just what was needed to iron out the kinks although I have to admit that I found a few muscles in the arms this morning that I didn't know I had - and in the end I thoroughly enjoyed watching tent town come down - I wasn't much help but I admired the industry.
grootkloof04.jpg, 64959 bytesSo thankyou to Horst for organising, our intrepid camelmen for making the expedition possible for us (and enduring quite a lot of suffering in the process ) and to the dolls who contributed their domestic efforts to the outing as well.....I love you all!! Looking forward to the next hike already.
Jen
And here "THE GORGE", sorry not the best picture, my camera got all misted up and wet.
